Does Your Team Run Like a Porsche?

by Lynnell Ible, BSc

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Head Trainer, Hot Fox Fitness

Mention a Porsche 911 Twin Turbo S and most men along with a few women will start to drool.  Why?  For one, a Porsche has to be earned, and two, while it is sexy to look at, what is even more important is what's underneath.

The engine on a Porsche is in the back.  Why?  It enables the car to have better handling at higher speeds and because the engine is pushing instead of pulling the car.  This makes the car more efficient.

Our bodies are designed to operate and look like a Porsche, maintaining a beautiful shape with the power in the back.  Unfortunately in developed countries not only do most of us not look like one, but we do not operate like one.  We pull our bodies forward with the muscles in our shoulders and quads (front of thighs).  Aesthetically this leads to a flat butt, rounded shoulders and a sagging tummy.  Mechanically, as this is not how we are supposed to operate, it leads to shoulder pain, low back pain and knee pain.

How do we fix our Porsches?  The first step is correcting the starting posture.  To do so, we need to tilt the pelvis.

The pelvis tilt is where you tilt the top of your hip bones forward, getting a nice natural arch in your lower back.  This also lifts your butt over time, giving you a butt that looks like it could belong to Jennifer Lopez.

Try this:

Learning to hold this posture is the difficult part.  Use this starting position and perform movements like the squat, lunge, deadlift, push up as it will help activate the posterior chain.  This includes the glutes (butt), hamstrings (back of thighs), and back extensors.  These muscles are what make up your engine.

Just imagine how smoothly your company would run if every employee operated like a Porsche: smooth, stable, reliable, and thus, very valuable.   Do you need help turning your team back into Porsches?  Contact Lynnell Ible about our onsite corporate fitness program at (403) 850-6043 before January 31, 2011.  Mention the Beneco bulletin and save up to $600 on your first agreement.

Repair, Prevent and Protect: The Benefits of Spa-ing

by Christina Arthur-Dick
Marketing Director for Sante Spa, the Spa Ritual and Sante Spa Victoria

When consumers think of going to the Spa, many think of a place purely meant for superficial grooming.   Many miss out on the benefits of treatments that can aid in preventing, repairing, or protecting your health and wellbeing.

Spas have come a long way from only being used by the rich and famous or only afforded by royalty.  Men have become one of the fastest growing demographics of spa-goers, and men and women alike are not only seeking the rejuvenating benefits of spas but realizing the preventative health benefits as well.

The Spa Ritual and Sante Spa have been designed to be a place where you can go to escape, taking a break from your demanding life and revitalizing your body and mind.  A visit to a spa is similar to stepping into a different world. Everything feels so calm and relaxed - comforting music, gentle aromas, a quiet environment, and then, of course, the different soothing spa treatments. In a spa, you get to be cared for like royalty as you have your nails done or relax through a massage as tension in your muscles is released.  Here is a list of the top ten benefits of visiting a spa:

1.    Stress Management and Relaxation: Every type of treatment or service including massage can help you relax and rejuvenate. The tension that can build in your muscles can be a source of irritability that many people do not recognize. The price of a day at the spa is not as expensive as the cost of high blood pressure and pulled muscles.

  1. Anti-Aging and Healthy Skin: Taking care of your body, mind and skin helps to ward off the aging process and can help prevent more costly procedures later in life.  Facials and medical aesthetics such as micro-dermabrasion or chemical peels target skin problems to keep you looking your best.
  2. Increased Self Esteem and Confidence: Taking time to pamper yourself and to take care of your body and mind can significantly improve your body image, increase your body awareness, and improve your self esteem.  Medical Spas may offer treatments that can reduce the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines or sun spots and have medical professionals that can recommend the best treatments for your concern.
  3. Improved Circulation and Blood Pressure: Many services such as heat therapy, hydrotherapy, massage and body treatments help to improve circulation and reduce blood pressure.
  4. Detox: Some spa treatments promote detoxification, the elimination of toxins and excess fluids that can contribute to loss of energy, constipation, bloating and water retention.
  5. Psychological Benefits: Being touched therapeutically through massage,  and other types of services result in many emotional and psychological benefits.
  6. Pain Management:Treatments such as massage can help alleviate pain.  Massage therapy can help with pain management in conditions such as arthritis, sciatica, muscle spasms.
  7. Improved Flexibility, Range of Motion and Athletic Performance: Massage, heat therapy, and hydrotherapy help to improve your joints and increase your range of motion.
  8. Improved Sleep Patterns: Through the relaxation process, people find that they are able to sleep better at night. This of course helps you function better and better able to handle stress.
  9. Improved Breathing: Sauna as well as massage can help to improve your breathing.

There's no denying it- a spa visit is sure to invigorate your senses and relax your body or at least, leave you in a feel-good mood.

If you are still questioning the benefits of making an appointment for a treatment, or feel guilty about indulging and pampering yourself, think about all of the wonderful benefits you will see from the experience.

Sante Spa and The Spa Ritual have received Quality Assurance Approval through Leading Spas of Canada.  The Spa Ritual is the recipient of internationally recognized 2010 Spa Excellence award.
